Best method for getting rid of snake mites?
My Ball Python has mites and i need to know the best solution to the problem. I've heard use Mite Away and Reptile Relief and then i heard to use other methods. Anyways, he isn't covered in them but he probably will be soon. We had to remove one from his eye yesterday and today i could see what looked like white specks rolling around his eyes. And he has little flaky spots on his body and head. I really want to get rid of them on him and in his enclosure. Can him having mites mess up his shed cycle too? Thanks
Are the white specks you're seeing what you believe are the mites? If so, then those aren't mites. Mites are red or black, not white. The tiny white bugs found in snake cages are often called springtails and are harmless bugs which feed on waste and old wood based bedding. They are nothing to worry about and cleaning the cage regularly and replacing the old bedding will take care of them. But if you are seeing actual mites, then they need to be treated. Some snakes with mites won't shed and will retain the old skin, causing more problems. Reptile relief and Mite Off aren't very effective. I recommend going to Wal-mart and looking in the pharmacy section for the head lice products. Buy a can of Equate Bedding Spray for 5 or 6 bucks. Clean the cage and then spray it down with the spray. Let it dry and put the snake back in. Repeat the process in 30 days to kill any mites which have hatched since the last treatment, and you won't have any other problems. Equate Bedding Spray has the exact same ingredients as Provent-a-mite, which is the most popular mite treatment on the market, but for a fourth of the price.
Leopard geckos and shedding?
My leopard gecko is about 10 months old, give or take a few weeks. How often should he shed? I bought him about 2.5 weeks ago, and a few days after I got him, he shed with no problems. Now, about 2 weeks later, his colors are beginning to turn a little bit dull and milky. Is he beginning the shedding cycle again? It seems awfully soon.... Hope he's not sick or stressed or anything.
Sounds like he's shedding again! I wouldn't worry too much about shedding after two weeks if there are no other problems, and especially since he may still be growing a bit at 10 months (maybe).
How often your gecko sheds will depend on your gecko's age/growth rate, reproductive status, the presence of parasites or infections, hormones, and nutrition, so those are all factors to consider.
