Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, but at times, we forget that their dog beds do too. Extra large dog beds aren't necessarily easy to find and purchase so sometimes people try to cope without them. For both you and your pet, this is a mistake.
The biggest dogs like Great Danes, Afghan hounds, St. Bernards etc... are a big responsibility for an owner. Time and again, people prepare themselves for the extra food, the extra room and the extra exercise that is needed to keep these dogs fit, healthy and happy. Frequently, their beds can be forgotten. Some owners even casually think their dog will be fine sleeping on the floor.
This is not so, and forcing dogs to sleep unsupported, without extra large dog beds, is just storing up trouble and vet bills for the future.

More often than not, a dog will sleep for 10-12 hours per day, very much like a baby. You wouldn't just leave your baby to sleep on the floor, would you? So why be so careless with the favorite family pet?
You should ascertain that any dog bed is fit for the needs of your particular dog. The largest dogs need extra large dog beds. They, like their smaller counterparts, may want to stretch out in their beds, to avoid muscle spasms and cramps, and to get a good rest or sleep. Just like humans! The bed should be big enough to support all of the dog's body.

Unfortunately, larger dogs often suffer from joint problems, arthritis, etc... Extra large dog beds will help in allowing your dog to sleep or relax in comfort off the hard, cold and sometimes damp ground which would only increase these problems. You can get dog beds made of memory foam, which gives additional support to the long spines and limbs of the larger dogs. This can be invaluable in avoiding joint problems later in the dog's life.
Size gives strength
When it comes to buying extra large dog beds, it's not only the size that matters. One has to take into consideration that larger dogs are stronger. Their bed has to be more resilient so that the sides won't split and the cushioning won't be squashed by their extra weight. Moreover, larger dogs have a stronger chewing action. Extra large dog beds should be made more resistant to chewing, so that they stay strong and safe for your dog to use for a long time.
Hygiene
As with any dog beds, it is vital to make sure that the beds are hygienic and can be kept that way. Covers should be removable and machine washable, and preferably coated with anti-odor Scotchguard to make them stain resistant and keep them smelling fresh. Water resistance is also an essential factor, regardless of whether your dog has an incontinence problem. Dogs tend to love playing in water and you don't what the water that stays on their coats to soak into the dog bed as this can cause mold as well as not smelling very good.
Design
Extra large dog beds need not look big and un-manageable in your house; many come in attractive designs and can even be personalized with your dog's name or any message you wish.
Extra large dog beds are worth it for the comfort and support they give to your adored dog and the peace of mind you get from knowing that you have done the best for your pet and are more likely to stay away from vet bills in the future.

Make an EXTRA-LARGE dog bed?
I have a 14 month GSD who is nearly fully grown and we are rescuing a doberman pup who is approx 6 months. I want to make a pillow bed big enough for the pair of them but I am not sure as to what materials would be best for the filling and outer of the bed. The doberman is still young so may be a chewer plus I am sure the two will have a go at playing tug of war so it has to be as durable as possible.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
A friend of my has a MASSIVE dog. He went to a second hand store and bought him a child sized mattress. Works very well. Throw some old blankets on there and you're golden.
What do I use for a bed in the cage for my Chihuahuas?
We are having to move into town from the farm for the winter which will necessitate our Chihuahuas spending some time in cages rather than 'free range' (they tear up too much, and may injure themselves tearing up Plants and electronics)
I hate for them to sleep without a bed in there. We bought fairly large cages 20"x26"x26" so there will be room enough for a bed as well as food, water and a puppy pad. One dog is 4lbs, the other dog is 7lbs.
Now what kind of bed? I have explained to them not to pee and poo on a bed, but I doubt they have listened. And nobody wants to wash dog pee out of a bed.
Any suggestions of what to use?

Angelcit, we did not wish to move into town for the winter, we had unforseen circumstances that we HAD to. Living in the city is like being in a cage to me.
We are not going on a trip, just for a little bit duing the day when we are not home to supervise them. We seldom go out of town.
During the summer, I hit garage sales for old blankets, pillows, sheets and towels. Old soft fuzzy clothes come in handy, too. I have 9 dogs and enough blankets and stuff for 18, so laundry day isn't so hard. Try thrift stores in your area. Or salvation army places might lend you a hand. I also usually wash the bedding every four days, but now that I still have puppies on the loose, I do it every two days. I'm also baby sitting my daughters dogs, but they should be gone tomorrow.
