3 yr old beagle urinating on the couch!! Help!?
I love my beagle. She is sweet and soft and the best cuddler in the world. I love to snuggle up tight with her and it’s one of my favorite things about having a dog. Unfortunatley, she pees on the couch about once every 2-3 weeks (and she has a big bladder!) She does it when I’m in bed asleep or in the next room. Otherwise, she is completely housebroken and signals that she has to pee by standing by the door. I’d like to share my couch with her freely but I can’t tolerate urine or the urine odor. Now I’m stacking kitchen chairs on the couch every night and making her sleep on a blanket.
She used to pee in her crate if I kept any material in there with her and I only was able to crate train her with a bare and empty crate, so I think it’s the fabric thing.
I don’t know what to do.
I think it may not be a bad idea to have a urinalysis checked on her at the vet. Some dogs pee in bad places to get your attention because something is wrong. Also, have you seen her do it? Does it ever happen on her bed? Some dogs have incontinence issues and don’t know their leaking urine, it usually happens when they sleep. There are pretty inexpensive medications for that problem. If its not a medical issue, you may want to try and pull up her water an hour or 2 before you go to bed. Then just leave her a small bowl to tide her over when you go to bed. Also, make sure she goes outside a couple of times right before bed time. Avoid salty snacks in the evening, like jerky treats or rawhides, they’ll just make her more thirsty. And finally, you may need to resort back to keeping her in a kennel overnight. If it saves your relationship with the dog, it will be worth it. Good luck.
