Garden Trellises Support

Garden trellises are structures we use to help support plants and vegetables. Garden trellises can be constructed of metal, wood, or plastic that can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to create a desirable form. The plants can be tied onto the supports or trained to climb in, around, or through them.

A garden trellis can be very decorative in a flower garden by enticing a flowering vine to grow tall. They are inexpensive and easy to maintain. Wrought iron garden trellises, garden arches, and wooden garden trellises can be purchased from most garden centers. If you decide to purchase wooden trellises make sure they are pressure treated because once the Flowers and vines start covering them it will be hard to maintain the structure. Your garden structures need to be placed in the garden where the flowers will receive the correct moisture and sunlight for survival.

Garden trellises are common supports that are used in vegetable Gardens. There are a number of vegetable garden peas and vegetable garden beans that need supports that are tall for them to climb. Some vegetable crops such as cucumbers, squash, and melons will benefit from trellises that run horizontal and are close to the ground. These crops will grow straight and remain clean because they will not be growing on the dirt.

Many tomato varieties are classified as "indeterminate" that means they continue to grow and produce fruit all season long. The best way to keep tomatoes off the ground is by using a tomato cage, tomato garden trellis or a tomato ladder. The "determinate" variety of tomato will also benefit from a garden trellis by keeping them off the ground; these plants grow to a particular height, will produce all of their fruit, and stop growing. Tomatoes that use trellises, cages or ladders will not rot as easy and be disease free more often.

Some gardeners prefer to make their own garden trellises. They will usually be constructed of two or more vertical supports with chicken wire or a mesh material stretched between each post for supporting the plants. These wooden or metal stakes should be pounded deep into the ground so they will be able to withstand a heavy wind. It is best to set your stakes at least a foot into the ground for supporting your vegetables. Besides using chicken wire or heavy mesh between the poles you can use galvanized fencing. The heavier material you use the more support your larger or vigorous crops will receive. These materials can be attached with nails, staples, and plastic or wire locking ties.

Some gardeners have small areas to garden and will not plant crops that require a lot of space. There are "bush" varieties for this very reason such as cucumbers, squash and melons. These long-vined varieties can be trained to grow on vertical garden trellises. The smaller versions of these plants, those that will only reach about 3 pounds, work best.

Garden Arch Questions

Can anyone recommend a lawn species for a shady spot?

Hi
I live in Brisbane, and have 2 big frangipani trees arching toward a wall. The grass species in the rest of the garden doesn't grow in this spot. I want to put in stepping stones with grass around them, as a little path. Does anyone know a species of grass that can thrive with a lot of shade and some falling leaves in autumn?
Cheers

There is no true shade grass; all grasses like some sun. However, the best of the bunch that can get along with less sun than the rest is Poa trivialis. Kentucky 31 tall fescue, Zoysia, Japonica, Zoysia matrella, Astoria bent, Highland and Penncross bents, as well as creeping red, Illahee, and Chew-lugs fescue, all will tolerate light shade.

Hybrid Tea Roses?

I bought a Chicago Peace and a Anastasia Hybrid Tea Rose bush and I was wondering how long it would take them to climb one of those arches in the entrance to a garden?

Also do they stay all winter or does the bush die back and come up again in the Spring? Any expirience of your own with these roses is welcome. Thanks.

Roses are woody shrubs of sorts. If your winters are nasty, you might cover or mulch the bases for the winter. Lots of Rose growers prune Hybrid tes roses down to 12-18" for the winter. it makes them easier to protect. However, I have read that the Chicago Peace is exceptionally sturdy.

Personally, I like the "wild" look, and tend to not do much pruning, except to take off parts that have clearly died. And if you're wanting a climber, you'll definitely want to prune differently than if you've got a specimen Tea Rose.

But both of those are tea rose bushes, as opposed to climbing rose bushes. They are tall, upright habits, but they are not tru climbers, so I'm not sure they are going to do what you are expecting of them - namely to climb right over your arbor.

You might consider moving them to a nice showy spot in your garden, and look for climbing roses in particular for your arbor, especially if it's tall.
